Microsoft Word - Thesaurus

When it turned out that our print thesaurus didn't include some of the words for which the third graders wanted synonyms, I decided to eschew it in favor of an online resource: Microsoft Word. Did you know that it can help you find better, more interesting words when you are writing a report or a story?

Depending on the version on your computer, the way to access the thesaurus varies slightly. But it's generally under "Tools" on the standard toolbar.

Students practiced opening Word on the laptops, then typed a word and chose a new one from the thesaurus. Here are some of their synonym pairs:

smart brainy
money cash
currency
crazy fanciful
annoying bothersome
awesome breathtaking
astonishing
break snap in two
sassy impudent

THANK YOU SPIE!

Thanks to the generosity of Shelley Fusco and SPIE, the library was able to use bookfair proceeds to acquire dozens of in-demand titles from Scholastic.

Everything you see below (well, except for the math picture books that will be used for teaching) has already been checked out. I'm not sure how I managed to leave Haunted Houses out of the picture ... not only is it out, but 15 students have placed holds on it! What a treat to get brand-new books in the middle of the year. THANK YOU!!!!

ABC Order - Grade 1

The first graders have been selecting picture books from the shelves for a couple of months now; I want to make sure they understand how the shelving works, so we have been reviewing alphabetization. Kids took turns coming up to the SMART Board to play two games. You can try them at home:

Synonym Games

Third graders are learning about synonyms, antonyms, and how to use a thesaurus. These games got them started:

Synonyms Rags to Riches - can you make it to a million?

Synonym Toast - I had trouble with this one ... it's fast-paced!

Colorful Chameleons - PM K

In kindergarten, we read The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle and talked about how chameleons can change color. Here is one in action:

Then the students colored their own chameleons.

Click the Continents

Do you know the location of all 7 continents and 5 oceans?

Test yourself and see how quickly you can reach 100%.

I believe the best fourth-grade time is J.M. with 16 seconds.

Grade 5 Advertising Agency

To coincide with the timing of the Superbowl (and its ads), fifth graders learned about three advertising tactics to be aware of: exaggeration, generalization, and scare tactics.

We saw exaggeration in a car ad and generalization for pistachios.

Then the students created their own ads using at least one of these tactics. Here are some of them:
